Conclusions
It is only through the interest and dedication of many people who look after different types of land that these remnants of grassy ecosystems with their unique biodiversity will be retained into the future. The kit has been developed to assist people conserve and manage these remnants. The approach is a flexible one allowing for site-specific plans that draw on landholders’ knowledge and experience.
The kit is designed for the assessment of grassy vegetation and habitat at all scales. As a result it is suitable for use by regional planning groups, Landcare groups and individual landholders and land managers. Liaison officers who are experienced in using the kit can give training to landholders.
The kit is designed to be an adaptable guide to encourage landholders to apply and enhance their own knowledge to achieve a practical plan for their own uses. The focus is on implementing the best management practices and to learn through experience and to apply that knowledge to improve management practices. Its presentation in a loose-leaf folder is specifically designed to encourage its adaptive use to suit the land manager’s own needs.
The authors welcome feedback on the design of the kit and the relevance to individual people, so that it can be adapted where appropriate. Copies of the kit can be obtained by emailing Sarah Sharp sarah.sharp@act.gov.au and the same email can be used to provide feedback to the authors or to get copies of any revisions that are made to the kit.
