Outline of the Kit
The kit is presented in a loose leaf folder to enable the collation of all relevant material, including the information provided, completed site recording sheets, the plan, records and other related information.
The kit contains a workbook that describes a set of steps that can be followed to produce a conservation management plan for a particular site. Because landholders already have experience in managing their land and have insights into the unique features of their sites, the procedures outlined in the Management Kit can be easily modified to suit the manager, site and its land uses.
The workbook outlines a series of steps to be undertaken to develop a plan. These steps show how the land manager can:
- Identify vegetation composition, habitat and condition on the site and produce a detailed map of the site features and conservation values (Steps 1–6).
- Develop conservation management objectives and identify management issues and actions required to maintain the identified conservation values and prepare a plan (Steps 7-9).
- Monitor impacts of management (Steps 10-15).
- Review the results of the management and revise the plan if required (Step 16).
An example of a management plan that has been used for over six years in the Crace Grassland Reserve in the ACT is provided as a case study. The kit also contains a copy of the booklet, Managing Native Grassland. A guide to management for conservation, production and landscape protection, by David Eddy. These guidelines provide recommendations to assist in deciding what management may be used to achieve certain outcomes and resources. The reference section lists further information including field guides, reference books, addresses for Internet websites, government agencies, non-government organisations, community groups and networks. There is a glossary, a species list of common grassy ecosystem plants and additional recording sheets. The enclosed disk contains a copy of the workbook and copies of the recording sheets. The folder can be used to hold the plan and additional information collated by the land manager.
