Animals in grassy ecosystems
Many animals live in or use grassy ecosystems. Some are found only in particular communities. Others are common to a number of vegetation communities and use grassy communities intermittently for activities such as migration, feeding or breeding. Retaining existing bushland that includes grassy ecosystems will retain habitat for many of these species. Because grassy communities are severely reduced in area or are greatly modified, some animals that are dependent on them have declined or become extinct. Many of these species have been declared threatened under Commonwealth, state and territory legislation.
